October 28, 2024 – The Rev. David W. Brown has been named the new executive director of the Civic Coalition to Save Lives, marking a pivotal moment in the fight against gun violence in Philadelphia. Brown is currently the assistant dean at Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication.
Nearly 50 years ago, Brown survived an attempted drive-by shooting, an event that fuels his passion for violence prevention, according to the news announcement. In his new role, Brown will be charged with deepening collaboration across over 100 community organizations, businesses, and civic institutions.
“I’m excited to make a difference for those at risk of gun violence,” Brown said in the press announcement. “I survived a near-death experience that has shaped my lifelong commitment to reducing violence.”
Valerie Harrison, Temple’s vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion, praised Brown’s appointment.
“His deep involvement in Temple’s efforts to reduce violence, especially in North Philadelphia, makes him a natural fit for this leadership position,” she said in the statement.
